Slow Down, Save a Life

By Sherilyn Lee

“Slow Down, Save a Life” began behind the wheel of my rental car as I drove from Philadelphia to Thornton, Pennsylvania on a business trip several years ago.  When I saw that sign on the back of that truck, I knew I had to write about it.  I often write while traveling and these 10 poems visit Joshua Tree, Redondo Beach, CA, Kauai, HI, London, UK, Gambier, OH and questions like, “Am I up for this journey, what do I take with me, how did I get here, what happens when I return home, and what do I really need?”

I’ve been writing nonfiction for a little over a decade and receiving this nod from a panel of professional writers helps to light my way as I explore this genre that’s new to me.  I am delighted and honored to accept this writing award from San Diego Mensa.  Thank you to the volunteers of the Creative uRGe contest for their time, care, and hard work.  Keep writing!
